Why do SUVs and trucks have factory tinted windows but cars don't?

Is there a law I don’t know about? I can see a restriction on factory tinted front windows, but why can a truck or SUV have tinted back and rear side windows, but a car can’t? A wagon is considered a car and therefore no factory tint, but a small car based crossover SUV can? What kind of madness is this!

The only tint laws I know of cover the front windows and windshield (obviously) only. It’s likely a style thing. They want to make wagons seem more open and airy, and SUVs seem more exclusive and “VIP.”

Dunno. The Ody has traditionally had the rear windows all tinted slightly for better sun protection and privacy.

Right. All trucks, vans, and SUVs have standard or optional factory tint on the back and rear side windows. However, NO cars or wagons (classified as a car) have factory tint available. There must be some kind of regulation, or liability risk, as this would be an obvious way to make more money.

Must be some regulation, as it would be easy money for a manufacturer. Porsche could charge bonus extra for Porsche tint!

It’s the way the law is written and may vary State to State but in NYC SUVs and Passenger vans can have any tint in the rear passenger/back window. Sedans, wagons, coupes, hatchbacks are only allowed to have the top window strip.

That's the law in most states. It was originally meant for things like limos and work vehicles. In my state you can paint the back windows black on trucks and SUVs if you want. Modern cuvs technically don't count but most cops don't know or care enough to enforce.

My Skoda Superb came with factory tinting. The S, SE and SE Business had factory tinting as an option while the SEL Exec and Laurent & Klement has it as standard on both the hatchback and the estate.

Thats why I put tint on my car when I bought it last year. I decided a 30% all around, it also has no AC (base model lyfe) so it helps with the heat in the summer. I really want to put a glossy black vinyl over the matte black between the windows to make them “disappear”.

If I recall correctly, you can get any BMW in Germany with factory tint.

Ah yes, but you forget about the Porsche DoppelTaintFenster (DTF) or Double Tainted Windows option - $395

I’m sure they mean tint, but you never know with these kinky Germans. Still, for only $400, who wouldn’t want some extra taint with their Porsche?!

Wagons do. At least my Magnum has the passenger rear and rear windows tinted factory.

I think thats because the Magnum was actually classified as a light truck. Do the rear seats fold flat for an extended load surface?

Damn straight they do. Had an 8 foot ladder in there before. It was tight, but it fit.
